A Reservist's responsibilities

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) strongly encourages all Reservists to act responsibly by keeping their employer informed about their commitments as a Reservist.

To identify themselves as a Reservist

Reservists have always been strongly encouraged to tell their employer that they are a member of the Volunteer Reserve Forces (VRF). This includes mentioning their Reservist status at job interviews or telling you about their intentions before they join the VRF.

Now, anyone who joins the VRF, or seeks to renew their commitment (re-engage), must give permission for the MOD to write to their employer directly. This system, called 'Employer Notification', is designed to ensure that you are aware that you have an employee in the VRF and that you know about the associated benefits, rights and obligations. To find out about their employer's policies

Reservists are responsible for finding out about any policies their employer has relating to the VRF, in case they affect availability for training and other commitments.

To ask their employer for training leave

It is up to individual Reservists to make you aware of their basic training commitments and Annual Camp, and to ask for training leave when it arises.

To inform their employer if they are mobilised

If a Reservist gets a compulsory Call-out Notice for mobilisation, they are responsible for informing you as soon as practically possible.

As part of the mobilisation process you will receive a letter, which sets out the date and possible duration of mobilisation. It also explains your statutory rights and obligations - including the entitlement to apply for an exemption or deferral from mobilisation under certain circumstances.
