What you need to know about financial assistance
13 August 2008

It is crucial that employers of Reservists know that there is financial assistance available to them and how easy it is to claim. The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has made efforts to get more employers to claim back any costs when a member of staff is mobilised for full-time service.
Key facts at a glance:
You can claim for reimbursement of the additional costs you incur as a result of the mobilisation which exceed the money you are saving by not paying your mobilised employee's salary and benefits while he/she is away.
- One off costs, such as advertising for a temporary replacement for your mobilised member of staff or a one-off agency fee
- Ongoing costs such as extra overtime costs, ongoing agency fees or paying additional salary to temporary replacement
- Training costs: if, when they return, your employee requires training which they would not have needed if they had not been mobilised, then you can claim the cost back
- You cannot claim for continued payment of salary or benefits as the MoD will pay your employee's salary and compensate them for any benefits they stop receiving from you
- You cannot claim for loss of profits, turnover or goodwill
