Territorial Army celebrates 100 years of service today

1 April 2008

Guns were fired in the Capital today as the Territorial Army (TA) celebrates 100 years of service. A press conference was held at the Tower of London as celebratory guns were fired in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast.

Defence Secretary Des Browne and the British Army Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt attended the event at the Tower of London.

British Army Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt said: "The Territorial Army has been a fundamental part of the British Army since its formation as the Territorial Force in 1908.

"During the past six years in particular, members of the Territorial Army have made considerable personal sacrifices and have provided indispensable support to current operations.

"This participation has been at a level seldom seen throughout its distinguished past."

Reservists account for 25% of the nation's total defence capacity. The TA plays a vital part in the British Army's worldwide role. Throughout its history the soldiers of the TA have fought alongside Regular soldiers in almost every major conflict.

One of the key components in the success of the TA has always been the goodwill, support and encouragement of the nation's employers. It is their willingness to champion the men and women who choose to serve as Reservists that make the role possible.

Other events to mark the anniversary include parades across the country and a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in July. For more information about other TA 100 events visit www.ta100.co.uk.
