Employers visit Afghanistan to see Reservists in action
7 March 2008
This unique visit that SaBRE runs exclusively for employers is a remarkable opportunity for employers to gain a greater understanding of the work Reservists undertake as members of the Armed Forces.
The employers abroad programme has held visits to operational theatres such Iraq, Bosnia, and Cyprus as well as Afghanistan. The scheme is designed to demonstrate to employers the value of Reservists work and the skills they can bring to the workplace.
Six employers embarked on a visit to Camp Bastion, southern Afghanistan to observe Reservists in their varying roles such as the Joint Force Medical Group, elements of the Royal Marines Reserve, Territorial Army and Royal Auxiliary Air Force.
Peter Bishop, the Deputy Chief Executive of London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) who attended the three day tour said: "As an organisation which provides business support and networking opportunities, LCCI are increasingly aware of the benefits of employing Reservists."
Clinical Director Stephen Worrall, having observed the work being done by Reservists first-hand at the field hospital in Camp Bastion is also interested in making a greater contribution as an employer.
"I was amazed just how big the operation is. I was extremely impressed by the quality and level of the medical care that they are able to deliver in the field. It is very high-quality trauma service - they probably get more experience of trauma than any other team in the UK and they are getting stunning results," he said.
Vij Randeniya, the Deputy Chief Fire Officer for the West Midlands Fire Service, recalls his experience of the visit:
"People from a whole range of everyday jobs posted for six months cope with an enormous workload with very little rest time in a remarkably spirited manner. They develop considerable skills such as the ability to work well under pressure, team work, leadership and a range of technical abilities - most of these skills they can use in the workplace.
"The West Midland Fire Service support Reservists, we have changed our procedures to reflect this and I would encourage all employers to do the same. Reservists are indeed ordinary people doing an extraordinary job and I salute them."
