Welcome to the world of the Reserve Forces

In the July issue of SaBRE Briefings, we'd like to offer you a glimpse of what it's actually like for a Reservist to be mobilised. Although not every member of the Volunteer Reserve Forces will ever serve overseas, operational support is what every single one of them trains for. This is where all their skills, both mental and physical, are put to the test, in some of the most dangerous places on earth, often a very long way from home. Three Reservists who have recently been in the thick of the action bring you their stories.

Will Sallitt

Seeing the rewards of reconstruction in Iraq

Spending 6 months in Baghdad and Basra enabled Will Sallitt to see first hand, the positive effects of reconstruction on the local community.

J Applebee

From skydiving instructor to Para

Force protection makes up a significant proportion of Reservist roles overseas. Dave Walker describes how he and his 27-man platoon risked their lives every day for nearly 6 weeks to protect the Kejaki Dam.

Douglas Kennedy

Operation Southern Afghanistan

Consultant Surgeon, Douglas Kennedy, explains how serving in Afghanistan taught him new skills, and confirmed his enormous respect for the men and women serving in the Volunteer Reserve Forces.
